Drinking water treatment plant for Wycheproof

On 23 June, Minister for Water, Peter Walsh, announced the State Government will provide $1m to install a two megalitre a day ultra filtration treatment plant at Wycheproof. This will be a dollar-for-dollar funded project with GWMWater and the total cost of the project is $2m.

At the Wyche VISION June meeting GWMWater Executive Manager of Service Delivery, Stephen Jewell explained the proposal to upgrade the water supplied in Wycheproof to drinking quality. This will mean some rise in costs of water supply and the cost of water usage to residents and this was estimated to be 70 cents per week  ($42 per year). The site of the ultra filtration plant is still to be determined.

For some months now Wycheproof residents  have had to boil the town water for drinking and food preparation.  Stephen explained that the turbidity (the particles in the water such as clay and biological matter) and the colour of the water (also due to presence of organic matter) were directly related to problems in the Grampians catchment following the 2006 bushfires and the floods in September 2010 and January 2011. The water for Wycheproof is drawn from Lake Bellfield, which was badly affected by the floods and there was no alternative water source, he said.

Stephen said that the current state of Lake Bellfield was baffling experts. The water temperature from the top through to the bottom of the lake was the same and there was no settling of particulates making the water throughout the lake dirty.

The Wyche VISION meeting discussed the benefits to businesses in town and also for those wanting to establish value-adding business on farm and for livestock. It was agreed that having drinking quality water available to district farmers should be included as part of the planning for the water treatment plant. Stephen told the meeting that current water saving initiatives, such as the storm water collection dams used on the recreation reserve and Centenary Park, would not be affected with the establishment of a treatment plan.

Boil water notice  GWMWater has advised Wycheproof residents to boil the town water before use.  Due to problems being encountered as a result of the January flood, residents are advised to bring any water from the town water supply to a rolling boil prior to use for human consumption purposes including food preparation and ice making. This can be achieved by using an electric kettle with an automatic cut off switch.

GWMWater has a water cart located in O'Connor St for residents requiring clean water.
